Way to properties off a road. Equivalent to a ginnel, entry, lonning, etc., in other towns.

Yards in Kendal were usually given a number consecutive to the adjacent properties or yards (e.g. 75 Highgate, Yard 77 Highgate, 79 Highgate)but were also additionally named according to a characteristic (e.g.Two Seater Yard Highgate), related to the name of the owner (e.g. Rhodes Yard) or an industry that occupied it (e.g. Tanners Yard, an adjacent building (Blackhall Yard) or business (Angel Yard or a combination of these (Pack Horse Yard 80 Stricklandgate).
