The ancient main road out of Kendal town centre to the south travelling through the historic township of Kirkland.

From it's northern end junction with Highgate, where Blindbeck crosses under the road, it extends south to it's junction with Milnthorpe Road where it is joined from the east by the road over Nether Bridge to Aynam Road and the older Lound Road. It is joined by Peppercorn Lane on the east.

On the east side there is access to the Peppercorn Lane car park and to the Kendal Parish Church car park. There was also access to a ford across the Kent. On west side it is joined by Capper Lane and the narrow Kirkbarrow Lane both now footpaths. Previously when the road extended south past Nether Bridge it was also joined by Poorhouse Lane.
