Kent Terrace
Previous name for Thorney Hills
Built in 1824 shortly after the opening of the Kendal and Lancaster Canal in 1819.
"The terrace, of most commanding exterior, on the east side of the town, is "Kent Terrace." It is built on what was formerly called Thorney Hills, from the abundance of thorns, long ago uprooted. The houses have the advantage of a fine sweep of the Kent immediately in front, and a good view of the town at a little distance beyond, crowned by Kendal Fell." (Nicholson FGS, 1861, p149)
January 25, 1858, Marriage of the Princess Royal celebrated at Kendal, with considerable rejoicing; the Mayor (John Jowitt Wilson) presented about 1,300 scholars with a currant bun each, in front of his own house on Kent Terrace. (Nicholson FGS, 1861, p304)
