133 Stricklandgate
On the east side of Stricklandgate between 131 and Yard 135 Stricklandgate.
The building probably dates to the early C19th but it has been subject to numerous changes. It is in two parts with the two storey retail premises to the street and a warehouse/workshop to the rear. The latter has a face into a small internal courtyard that is shared with the public house (previously the Sawyers Arms, 137-139 Stricklandgate) and has a door which is accessed from Stricklandgate via the a passage entrance (Yard 135) to the courtyard.
The building is a cottage form with a gabled roof covered in later C19th Welsh slate. The first floor windows to the Stricklandgate are unhorned timber sashes dating to about 1850 with modern opaque glass. The shopfront has thin pilasters and a raking cornice so could be very early C20th but the modified entrance door, with lower fielded panels could be earlier. The painted render walls are likely to be C20th, The rear warehouse is in three narrow bays and is un-rendered. All of the openings have heads formed from thin limestone voussoirs. There was a 'taking in' door at first floor level facing into the shared yard with windows either side with late C19th horned sashes. The vertical boarded entrance door below is relatively modern although the frame and barred light above is likely to be older and is also flanked either side with horned sash windows.
The rear of the building is visible from Yard 143 and has a central chimney stack with a small window to the left at attic level but otherwise no openings as it has outbuildings of an adjacent property built against the gable.
