Union Buildings are so named from having been erected by a society of tradesmen united for that purpose.

The Union Building Society commenced operations around the time the [Kendal and Lancaster Canal]] was opened (22 February 1819); and "indeed on every side, numerous habitations were superadded to the town" Annals of Kendal (p148).

In 1819-1820 Caroline Street, Union Street, Cross Street, and Strickland Place were built. (Society of Odd Fellows established in Kendal - hence the Oddfellows Arms pub on Burneside Road). Shaw's Brow built, by Mr. Thomas Shaw, Senior.
