New page

The original entrance to Elephant Yard was not quite where it is today as part of the [[Elephant Yard Shopping Centre]] - it was previously adjacent to the [[Woolpack Inn]].

==History==

In "An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Westmorland" [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/rchme/westm/pp119-129] the Kendal section (p119-129) lists a cottage in the yard:

(35). House, on the W. side of Elephant Yard, 20 yards S.W. of (34), retains two cylindrical chimneyshafts. The W. wing has two original windows with solid frames. Inside the building is a panelled partition with the initials and date T. and K.S. 1651 on the enriched frieze. There is some more panelling of the same period and some 18th-century doors and a staircase.

This cottage, with a photograph of the panelling, is mentioned in Jack O'Connor's book ("Memories of Old Kendal")
