This grand house was originally the middle three bays of larger 9 bay house (now 1-4 Town View).

It is a Grade II Listed Building, part of [https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1158075?section=official-list-entry 1-4 TOWN VIEW, WINDERMERE ROAD, LA9 4QL] Listed 24.04.51

House, now subdivided. 1831 by [[John Richardson 1774-1854|John Richardson]] for [[William Wilson]]; damaged by fire in 1847. Later additions and alterations. Limestone blocks; quoins and 1st-floor sill band to nos. 1 and 3; plinth, corner pilasters, and eaves band to no 2. Moulded cast-iron gutter on dentils to nos. 2 and 3. Graduated slate roofs (hipped to nos. 1 and 3); stone end chimneys. [[Town View]] is a road off the south side of [[Windermere Road]] between [[St Thomas's Church]] and [[South View Lane]], opposite the old [[Kendal Union Workhouse]], later [[Kendal Green Hospital]] and now a housing development. It now leads to the [[Maudes Meadow Residential Home]] and the [[Town View Fields Hostel]].

Originally built to access [[1 Town View|1]], [[2 Town View|2]], [[3 Town View]] and [[4 Town View]] when they were built a sone house.

Here was born, in the year 1823, the eminent engineer, William Johnson. Having early displayed a taste for mechanical pursuits, a situation was obtained for him at the cotton manufactory of Messrs. Ainsworth, of Preston. There he remained studying the structure of the various machines within his reach, improving his knowledge of practical engineering, until the year 1843, when he entered the office of a civil engineer and devoted his life to that profession. Contributing articles to the mechanical papers of the day, he soon attracted the attention of the editor of the Glasgow Practical Mechanic's and Engineer's Magazine, who offered him the sub-editorship of that journal in 1845. That periodical having been given up in 1848, Johnson, young as he was, had the enterprise to start the Practical Mechanic's Journal entirely on his own responsibility, which he carried on with very marked success for many years. Soon after he undertook the business of a Patent Agent, and as this rapidly increased and required more attention than he could possibly give to it, he took into partnership his younger brother, John Henry Johnson, who opened a branch office in London. William died at Glasgow on the loth day of June, 1864; and his brother, who for the last forty years had carried on and increased the business, has only just passed away in the month of March, 1900.</blockquote>
